Rainy days happen, and it’s good to have a plan for when they do. With these ideas your family will be so busy having fun, you might forget about the weather. Don’t let a rainy day get you down. Try these fun rainy day activities for kids to turn a rainy day into a fun day indoors with the family.
For those of you who don’t want to brave the rain, puzzles are a great rainy day activity that keep kids’ brains engaged. Pull out one large puzzle, and start with the edges. Have your kids look for all the edge pieces, and work on the border. Once you’re done with the border, start sorting pieces by color, pattern or a section of the puzzle. Then work on the middle section. You all will get a great feeling of accomplishment when you put that last piece into place.
Another fun way to do puzzles is to buy a couple of puzzles with a smaller piece count. Give everyone their own puzzle and table to do it on. Say “1, 2, 3, GO!” and it’s a race to see who can finish the puzzle first. Generally it’s best to do a 100-300 piece puzzle if you’re racing.
Break out your summer camp craft skills and complete an art project. Steal some ideas from camp: friendship bracelets, painted rocks, wind spinners and more. Spend the day making crafts, swapping stories and just having a creative time. Head to the Happy Camper Live Arts and Crafts Camp online for more ideas.
There’s nothing like a sweet treat to turn a rainy day upbeat. Head to the kitchen and spend some time baking cookies, cupcakes, a cake or your other favorite dessert! Give everyone a job so it’s a family affair. While the cookies are baking, decide what rainy day movie you want to watch. Then, once your dessert is ready, turn on the movie and enjoy a delicious treat with it.
A pack of cards can keep kids entertained for hours. There are so many games to play: Go Fish, Old Maid, Rummy, Spoons, and many other variations. Uno is another easy game to play that can sometimes take a long time!
Pull out the board games too. If you know you’re going to be stuck inside all day, board games can keep kids from getting bored. Monopoly, Scrabble, and Clue are fun ones for the whole family. Or if your kids are younger, opt for some like Ants in the Pants or Candyland.
Embrace the your adventurous side and play in the rain. Put on your best rain gear — we’re talking waterproof boots, hats, jackets and pants. Get covered in rain gear from head to toe and brave the rain. This may not be doable if it’s really pouring, but if it’s a light mist, don’t let it stop you from adventuring outside. You can take a walk and look at how plants and animals react to the rain. Look for frogs and other animals that tend to come out more when it’s wet outside. Find a couple of puddles and splash in them. Note, splashing is only recommended if you’re in full rain gear.
