5 Reasons Kids Should Try Sewing

Written By: happycamper

We love crafting sew much! Sewing is an underrated summer camp craft that is actually really rewarding and fun once you’ve learned the basics. If you’re looking for a new hobby to keep you busy indoors, give sewing a try!

5 Reasons Kids Should Try Sewing This Summer

Reason #1 You Can Wear What You Makeheadband

Express your individuality! There are so many things you can learn to make on a sewing machine. Any dress or outfit you can draw and dream up can become a reality. Accessories are generally easy starter projects for newbies. Dress up your outfits with handmade bandanas, bow ties, scarves, headbands and scrunchies. Make and wear your own fashion! You won’t have to worry about your friends having the exact same outfit as you since yours will be one-of-a-kind!

Reason #2 It’s A Stress Reliever

Sewing can have mental health benefits such as keeping you focused, encouraging mindfulness and reducing anxiety. It’s also very rewarding to hold something in your hands that you made, and that can help boost confidence.

Reason #3 It Keeps Your Brain Active

While the repetitive motion of the sewing machine itself can be mellow, the other parts that go with sewing keep your brain quite active. When you do a sewing project you’re measuring and calculating fabric sizes, using your math skills. You’re also using the creative side of your brain to help you make choices about colors, patterns and fabric styles. Cutting fabric works on hand-eye coordination, and don’t forget, you’re reading instructions and patterns! Sewing projects keep you learning, no matter your age.

Reason #4 It Teaches The Value Of Handmadebowtie

Developing a love for sewing means developing a love of handmade. There are so many reasons handmade is a good choice — when you buy handmade you’re supporting a small business, handmade means someone spent time and effort putting their creative energies into a project, and if you’re making something yourself it feels good to see a result. Plus you can make really awesome gifts for your family, friends, teachers and camp counselors!

Reason #5 It Reduces Your Environmental Impact

If you know how to sew, you can keep your favorite clothes looking fresh instead of throwing them out and buying new ones. Don’t throw away your favorite shirt because of a small tear, simply sew it up and it’ll be as good as new. Enjoy your clothes longer.
