Sometimes winter feels like it will last forever, but spring is just around the corner. It’s important to make sure you are staying active even when it’s gloomy or snowy outside. Being active is one way to stay healthy all winter long. All you need to do is bundle up, and then outdoor activities become much more enjoyable. So what are you waiting for?
Going for a walk has mental, emotional, and physical health benefits. Plus, it’s absolutely free to do and the whole family can go for a walk together. Studies have shown that walking helps kids feel calmer and happier, and can even help improve their attention. Grab the family and go for a walk at your neighborhood park or trail. Enjoy the fresh air and the conversation with each other while getting some time away from screens.
Geocaching is the modern form of a treasure hunt. Participants can use their cell phone to look for clues that will lead them to containers called “geocaches” at specific locations around the world. Geocaching.com is a great place to begin. Create your account and download the app to your phone, then pick a geocache to find, and head off on the hunt! Some “caches” may be cleverly disguised, but they are often small containers made of metal, wood or plastic. They are hidden, but not buried in a place where they won’t be tripped on or completely missed.
When you find the cache, check inside to see if there is a logbook or small treasures inside. If you brought something to share, leave it inside or trade it for something else inside.
Make sure to put the geocache back exactly where you found it so the next person can find it too. This one might be tough to do in heavy snow. It’s a great activity for just when the snow has melted!
If you have been hesitant to go outside, it may be because you haven’t found your snow sport yet. There are so many winter sports to choose from, so there’s bound to be one that you like. If you’re good at roller skating, consider giving ice skating a try. If you like to skateboard, then snowboarding might be an easy transition for you. If you like to go for walks, snowshoeing will let you walk on snow!
Giving back to your community can be a year-round activity, and there’s plenty of people who need help in the winter. Plus, it gets you out of the house meeting people! Do a neighborhood cleanup with your friends outside. Pick up trash, and dispose of it properly so your neighborhood gets a refresh. Help a neighbor shovel their snow. Make cards for the nearby senior facility and then deliver them.
This is a great time of the year to try something new! Has your child been thinking about joining ballet? Try our Ballet Camp and learn ballet basics with camp counselor Lisa.
