Trick-or-treating may not be in the cards this Halloween, but there are still ways to celebrate at home with some fall treats that kids can help make and enjoy. These fall treats are great for the month of November too.
Sugar cookies can be dressed up for any time of the year including Halloween and fall. Grab some cookie cutters in your favorite fall shapes — leaves, pumpkins, acorns, and apples are easy to find — and cut out cookies. Bake them, and decorate with a variety of fall frosting colors and toppings. Get creative with your toppings and use sliced almonds, cinnamon or caramel for a fall feeling.
Instead of worrying about breaking a tooth on a candy apple on a stick, cut up apple slices, and drizzle caramel sauce over them. Top them with mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles or other toppings of your choice. It’s much easier to eat and better for your teeth!
Fill plastic cups about halfway with a chocolate pudding. You can also use individual premade pudding packs if you’re short on time. Crumble Oreos or chocolate cookies in a food processor until they are really small pieces, and put a layer of cookie crumble on top of the pudding to make the next layer of dirt. Add a couple of candy pumpkins, and use a green sour patch straw to connect them as the vine. Voila, you’ve got a pumpkin patch for your mouth!
Everyone loves Chex Mix, so why not make a batch that’s customized for fall? Add traditional ingredients like your favorite cereals including Chex Mix, peanuts, pretzels and chocolate chips. For a fall twist, add a little extra sweetness to it, and throw in some candy corn and candy pumpkins. Add Bugles to represent little cornucopias. Apple chips, caramel popcorn and caramel chips also make an interesting fall flavor.
Head to your local donut shop and purchase a bunch of donut holes, aim for the ones that are plain glazed. Dip the top of the donut holes in melted Nutella, then dip it in sprinkles. Break a pretzel stick in half and stick it in the top of the donut to be the acorn stem.
You can make your own Rice Krispies Treats or purchase individual ones from the store. Buy chocolate in fun fall colors. Melt the chocolate and dip the treats in to give them some fall colors. You can do this with yellow and orange to make it look like a candy corn, or go with fall leaf colors.
It may be too cold to camp, but it’s never too cold for s’mores. If you have a grill you can make them outside, otherwise you can use a microwave or oven indoors. You’ll need graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate and anything else you want to use to make them unique. Try this fall s’mores combo: cinnamon cookies, caramel chips, an apple slice and marshmallow.
Take a video of your kids preparing the snacks and share it with the Campfire! If your kids liked these snacks, check out our cooking camp for all the best grilled cheese sandwich tutorials.
