Best Group Games For Summer Campers

Written By: happycamper

One of the best parts of summer camp is making new friends, and it’s easiest to do that by diving into group activities. Group games can bring campers together as they work toward a common goal, utilizing teamwork, creativity, and communication.

Here are some group games that are great for summer campers.

Capture The Flag

Capture the Flag is a classic outdoor game that combines strategy, stealth, and teamwork. It’s perfect for large groups and can be played in various terrains.

How to Play: Divide the playing area into two equal territories and split the campers into two teams. Each team hides a flag within their territory. The goal is to capture the opposing team’s flag and bring it back to your own territory without getting tagged. If a player is tagged while in enemy territory, they must go to a designated “jail” area until they are freed by a teammate.

Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt turns the campgrounds into a treasure trove of hidden items and clues. It’s an exciting way for campers to explore and work together to solve the clues.

How to Play:  Create a list of items for campers to find or clues leading to a final treasure. Teams race to find all the items or solve all the clues first. Ensure that the hunt encourages teamwork and fair play. Set boundaries to keep everyone safe.

Human Knot

The Human Knot is a fantastic icebreaker that encourages communication, problem-solving, and physical coordination.

How to Play: Campers stand in a circle and hold hands with two different people who are not next to them. Without letting go of hands, the group must untangle themselves into a circle. Communication is key. Encourage campers to talk through the process and be patient.

Dodgeball

Dodgeball is a fast-paced game that gets everyone moving. It’s a staple of many summer camps due to its simplicity and excitement.

How to Play: Divide campers into two teams and provide soft dodgeballs. Players try to hit members of the opposing team with the balls while avoiding being hit themselves. Make sure to explain all rules such as legal hitting zones and whether someone is out if the opponent catches their throw. Once hit, a player is out and must stand on the sidelines. The game continues until all members of one team are out.

Tug of War

Tug of War is a straightforward game of strength and teamwork. It’s a great way to engage large groups and can be played almost anywhere.

How to Play: Use a sturdy rope and mark a centerline. Split campers into two teams. Try to match them fairly so one team doesn’t have an obvious advantage. Each team pulls on opposite ends of the rope, trying to pull the other team across the centerline. Ensure that the game is played on a soft surface to prevent injuries. Emphasize the importance of teamwork.

Group games are an essential part of the summer camp experience, providing opportunities for campers to build friendships, develop new skills, and create lasting memories. These games can also be used in the classroom or at a birthday party because they’re fun all the time!
